I’m sure all the big fans of magic and wizardry, and those who can’t resist the incredible adventures of the most famous young wizard in the world, Harry Potter, felt the painful sentiment when the last adventure was released. In 2016, we were first introduced to the “Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them” franchise, which takes part in the same universe as Harry Potter, yet many years before the famous wizard was born, bringing magic back into our lives.
This spin-off of JK Rowling’s fantasy universe is counting now with its third movie, which was planned to be released on November 12, 2021, however, it was changed to 2022. In the first movie of the series, we were first introduced to the dark wizard, Gellert Grindelwald. Nonetheless, only in “Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald”, the second movie of the series, we learn more about the role interpreted by Johnny Depp. Unfortunately, in 2022, we won’t be seeing Depp as Grindelwald since he won’t take part in the third movie of the series. Let’s find out more about it!
What Happened to Johnny Depp?
In recent news, we learned that Warner Bros. asked Johnny Depp to resign from the role in the series. Depp shared with his fans on his social media the decision and thanked them for the opportunity and all of their support. However, most fans weren’t too happy to learn about this decision. What happened to make Warner Bros. take this decision?
It’s been a few years since we started to hear about the conflict between Johnny Depp and his now ex-wife, Amber Heard. They married in 2015, and one year later, Amber Heard had already filed the divorce, accusing Depp of abuse, to which Depp responded that she was trying to secure a premature financial solution by accusing him of violence. For years, we saw the ups and downs, and the controversial stories and twists of this narrative, however, when Heard decided to write an article about violence and abuse and reached the public, the headlines turned to the ex-couple once more. Depp was accused of extensive use of drugs and alcohol, of insulting his ex-wife through texts, and Amber even claimed he tried to kill her during these abusive years.
The turning point here was when The Sun newspaper accused Depp of being a “wife-beater”, and new stories started to appear. Stories where Amber accused Johnny of hitting her and throwing a cellphone to her face, leaving a bruise, and where Depp accused Amber of pooping in their bed, which she blamed on the dogs. Depp claimed that Amber was in fact the abuser in the relationship, and in 2020, a few phone recordings were released in which Amber Heard admitted to hitting Johnny. However, at the beginning of November, the court ruled against Depp, in the libel court case against The Sun Newspaper. This is ultimately the reason why Depp won’t be taking part in the “Fantastic Beasts” Franchise anymore.
Who Will Be The Next Gellert Grindelwald?
Now that Depp won’t be acting as the dark wizard, Warner Bros. needs to find a new actor for the role, and even though the releasing date was postponed, there’s still a hurry to find a replacement. Luckily, there’s a name that has been popping out to take this part. Mads Mikkelsen, an actor known for his acting roles in Hannibal and Marvel’s Doctor Strange, and with a great experience in interpreting villains, has been in conversation with the studios to be the next Grindelwald. As “Fantastic Beasts 3” is currently being filmed in the Uk and knowing that Depp has only filmed one scene for the movie, it will be easy for the next actor to start since there are not many do-overs to do. There are a few rumors that director David Yates is a big fan of Mikkelsen and who knows if this is one of the reasons for the interest in the actor. Fans were still hoping that Colin Farrel would take the place, but he’s currently filming “The Batman”. However, there isn’t any confirmation as to who is going to portrait the character, but there’s no doubt that all the fans are very curious to see the course the movie will take from now on. We will have to wait to see.
