I was nodding so frequently while reading this that I might have gotten whiplash. This is brilliant. But to change this fundamentally materialistic attitude of society today requires a sweeping wave of cultural and philosophical enlightenment. I do agree with Matt about the potential of the crisis to do that, but have doubts that it will happen. Because we've already seen the lack of seriousness regarding climate change. And because even when people are slowly realizing the full extent of the economic crisis(mainstream media and economists are still nowhere near), there's been little action to show for it. They say (or at least that guy from "The day the Earth stood still") that "we change at the precipice". I feel that most of us will fall off, and only the few that survive will take the lessons learned back down the mountain. For me—Capitalism is the economic format of Hedonism.
