As a survivor of the Holocaust, I am increasingly agitated by Serbian revisionist propaganda on the internet.
The crimes of the Croatian Ustashas were terrible, but the Serbian Chetniks also collaborated with German Nazis in World War II. Serbia was a Nazi puppet state in World War II led by Milan Nedic, Serbian fascist collaborator.
The oppression of Jews in Serbia started before the arrival of Hitler’s occupying forces. Six months before the Nazi invasion of Yugoslavia, Serbia voluntarily passed the legislation restricting Jewish participation in the economy, education and employment. One year later, on 22 October 1941, anti-Semitic “Grand Anti-Masonic Exhibit” was funded by Serbia’s capital city, Belgrade.
Serbian Nazi fascists worked closely with German Nazi officials in making Belgrade the first “Judenfrei” city of Europe. Serbian leader Milan Nedic made an official visit to Adolf Hitler on 19 September 1943, advancing the idea that Serbia is no place for Jews and thanking ‘Führer’ for his decision to exterminate our people in Europe.
Throughout the War, the Serbian Chetnik movement remained almost completely inactive against the occupation forces, and increasingly collaborated with the Axis, losing its international recognition as the Yugoslav resistance force.
On 20 December 1941, the Serbian Chetnik army supreme commander, Draza Mihailovic, issued the “instructions” to his units, outlining his mission to create ethnically pure Serbia and commit genocide against the non-Serbs, particularly Bosnian Muslims who in large numbers joined anti-fascist Partisans. According to Mihailovic’s instructions, Chetnik army’s objective is:
“The creation of Greater Yugoslavia, and within it Greater Serbia, ethnically clean within the borders of Serbia, Montenegro, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Srem, Banat, and Bačka; The cleansing of all national minorities [including Jews] and anti-state elements from state territory; The creation of direct common borders between Serbia and Montenegro, as well as Serbia and Slovenia by cleansing the Bosniak population from Sandžak, and the Bosniak [Bosnian Muslim] and Croat populations from Bosnia and Herzegovina; 7.The settlement of the areas cleansed of national minorities and anti-state elements by Serbs and Montenegrins (to be considered are poor, nationally patriotic, and honest families).”
With Adolf Hitler’s blessing, Serbian Nazi collaborators established the Serbian State Guard which comprised of around 20,000 Serb fascists, compared to the the 3,400 German police in Serbia. Their mission was to hunt down and kill Jews, Gypsies and other non-Serbs.
Milan Nedic’s second in command was Dimitrije Ljotic. Ljotic founded the Serbian Fascist Party and organized the Serbian SS Volunteers Corps which hunted down and killed Jews, Gypsies and Muslims. Serbian citizens received cash bounties for capturing or killing Jews.
Banjica concentration camp was primarily operated by Serb Nazis who took sadistic pleasure in killing Jews. The camp was created by converting barracks of the Serbian SS 18th infantry division. The funding for this conversion came not from Germans, but from the municipal budget of Belgrade.
Operation Halyard has often been cited as “evidence” of the Chetniks’ continuing strong pro-Allied sympathies for rescuing as many as 500 downed Allied airmen. However, they did so because they were paid in gold for each rescue. Partisans and Ustashas also rescued Allied airmen, and they were also paid in gold. Having lost all Allied support to the Partisans (along with the recognition of the King Peter II), and with the Axis defeat in Europe a certainty, Serbian Nazi collaborator Draza Mihailović went to great lengths to regain Allied support and to portray himself in a favourable light. However, the Allies were aware that Mihailović’s troops were rescuing German and Ustaše aviators from the Partisans (as indicated in a Nedić government report of February 1944) and, on other occasions, even hunted down Allied aviators on behalf of the Axis occupation.
Serbian collaborationist forces during this period, sanctioned by the Serbian fascist government, also included the ZBOR party and Serbian Volunteer Corps led by Dimitrije Ljotić and the rogue Chetnik faction of Kosta Pećanac. Serbian Gestapo, officially known as the 1st Belgrade Special Combat detachment, was a special Serbian SS police unit which was established in World War II Serbia.
It was only after the withdrawal of the Germans and the overthrow of the Nedic regime in October 1944 that the Serbs in Serbia began to join the anti-fascist Partisans in large numbers. These new Partisans included tens of thousands of former Serbian Nazi collaborators responding to Tito’s promises of amnesty.
Serbs and Serbia were no different than Croats and Croatia in World War II. They collaborated with Nazis and murdered Jews and Bosnian Muslims en masse. Some 94 percent of Serbia’s 16,000 Jews were exterminated, with the considerable cooperation of the Serbian government, the Serbian Orthodox Church, the Serbian State Guard, the Serbian police and the Serbian public. Some 60,000 Bosnian Muslims were killed by Serbian Chetniks. In February of 1944, Serbian Nazi collaborators slaughtered – by their own admission – 9,000 Bosnian Muslim civilians. In a report sent from Serbian Chetnik commander Pavle Djurisic reporting to General Draza Mihailovic, wrote:
“All Muslim villages in three mentioned locations [municipalities of Pljevlje, Cajnice, and Foca] were burned down, and not even one home remained intact…. During military operations, we engaged in total destruction of Moslem population without regard to their sex or age. Our victims include 22 dead, of which 2 by accident, and 32 wounded. We killed about 1,200 Muslim soldiers and about 8,000 of their women, elderly and children.”
Instead of poisoning the internet with half-truths and outright lies, it is time for Serbia and the Serbs to face reality and acknowledge they collaborated with Nazis and committed a genocide over Jewish and Bosnian Muslim population in World War II. May your God forgive you, but Jewish people won’t.

Serbs did not vote for Nedic, and nor did they vote for Hitler's forces to invade their land. Nedic was a puppet for the Nazis, but he was not a representative of the Serbian people. And, by the way, there are Serbian survivors of the Holocaust by the Nazis, with Serbs also ending up killed in concentration camps around Europe, and nobody has a patent on that phrase.
Serbs, in the April 1941 coup, got rid of Prince Paul who was trying to foster closer relations with the Germans and paid the price with the bombing of the open city of Belgrade and 5 years of war and 55 years of terrible communism after that. Do you suppose that any anti-Masonic exhibition would have taken place if the Nazis were occupying the country and executing Serb hostages at a rate of 100 Serbs executed for every German soldier killed? The 'Serbs' who declared Belgrade the first “Judenfrei” were the volksdeutsche, who were ethnic Germans born in Serbia. You can find out more about them if you ever to bother to pick up a history book and perhaps read it as well.
The information in the article is wrong. Chetnik battle and action reports were doctored by British communist spy, James Klugmann, who, as head of the Yugoslav section of SOE in Egypt, either did not pass them on to his superiors or credited the actions to Tito's partizan/communist forces. Klugmann's actions and communist bias affected the strategic decision to switch support to Tito's communists. US Colonel Robert MacDowell parachuted into the region, was allowed free access to all areas controlled by the Chetniks, and produced a report during the war, with one of the observations being that he witnessed Tito's partizans attacked Chetnik forces while the Chetnik forces were engaged in combat with German forces.
The mission of the Serbian State Guard was not to kill Jews, Gypsies, and other non-Serbs, but instead the unit was formed with the express intention of fighting communist forces.
The Youtube clip is a real gem. Nice fake captions with "majority of Serbs collaborated with Nazis" – try telling that to the 5000 Serbs, including high school students to make up the Nazis hostage 'quotas', massacred by the Nazis in Kragujevac on 20-21 October 1941 in retaliation for their own losses. The clown who wrote the caption for the clip was either ignorant or a liar, both of which are not good, but at least it's not as bad as actually believing the propaganda. Furthermore, people like Ljotic – and not second in command to Nedic, but then the caption writer for the clip has already lost the plot – had 1% of the populist vote before the elections and they and their Zbor party was not popular or democratically representative. The Serbian Volunteer Corps was not, as mentioned in the clip, an SS unit, they never wore SS uniforms or insignia, and they turned the Germans down when the Germans asked them to form an SS unit. The SVC was purely an anti-communist unit and not SS, so more fairytale telling in the captions. How 'terrible' the clip is, Serbs cheering Serbs.
Anyone still reading this far, please continue. The author then mentions the 'Serbian' SS 18th infantry division, so you figure this must be full of Serbs, right? Wrong! More misinformation. The 18th SS division was called 'Horst Wessel' and comprised of Hungarian volksdeutshe, ethnic Germans in other words, and there were many ethnic Hungarians and Germans in Yugoslavia at the time. If somebody is pointing their SS gun at your country, of course people can claim that the budget came from the victims of the criminals. If someone points a gun at you and asks for your wallet, they are getting your money whether you volunteer it or not. You cannot find genuine Serbian SS units containing ethnic Serb soldiers because such a thing did not exist, and the 1st Belgrade Special Combat unit was established by the Nazis who occupied Serbia, the Nazis own Gestapo, in fact, and it was done without the knowledge of consent of Gen.Nedic, and it would be disingenuous to allow the article to give the impression that it was Serbs who organized and ran that unit.
I can tell that the author has picked up from communist sources for this regurgitated propaganda because it reveals the bogus and completely without foundation story of Chetniks being paid in gold for rescuing airmen. There is no truth in this, it's just a lie made up by the jealous communists who wished to discredit the operation. You cannot find any evidence in US government or military archives or indeed witnesses (and you have 513 Americans to start with) who can corroborate that lie. There is further fluster about Mihailovic working for Nedic – that never happened, only in the imagination of people who cannot do their own research and feel the need to feed to to the gullible in the same way that a mother bird will feed her fledglings.
The above article insults the Serbian victims of the Nazis. It is a fact that Hitler loathed the Serbs, so don't try to push this fake agenda.
To “Nik”: Shame on you for trying to rehabilitate the Serbian fascist involvement in the Holocaust of Jewish people.
Serbs have a long history of the Holocaust ‘blame-shifting’, but Nazi Serbia was no better or worse than Croatia. Serbs were hunting down, arresting and killing Jews in the Holocaust – and that is a fact.
According to your ‘logic’ and false interpretation of history, we should rewrite the history and rehabilitate Serb fascists for the sole purpose of not offending the Serb people. Is that what you want to see happen?
Germany acknowledged its Nazi past and moved on; Serbia is still stuck in a limbo of historical myths. Serb children are thaught in schools to celebrate Serbian Nazi collaborators – Chetniks. You will never grow up and Serbia will never become a healthy society unless you fully acknowledge your Nazi past.

Thankyou Nik .. this information is very accurate. I am neither Serbian, Croatian, Bosnian, Albanian or any of the nationalities within Eastern Europe however as part of my degree i studied the history of the Balkans. The Serbian people throughout history have been given a bad name by the West. The horrendous British propoganda began in 1914 after a Serbian extremist shot the Archduke of Austria. The British were infuriated as the Triple Entente between Britain, France and Russia meant that Britain were broght into the war because of the close relationship between Serbia and Russia. The British fail to remember the war was mainly due to the Arms race between themselves and Germany. Serbia simply wanted independance. They had a right. Troughout the last centuary they have simply tried to create their own, successful country. Recently during the trouble with Kosovo, the Akbanian people tried to take away this area of Serbia simply because many Albanians live there. It is simply like saying Leicester (a very ethnically diverse city in England, Britain) should be called a Muslim country because of the majority of people that live there. Clearly this is absurd, as is the taking of Kosovo by Albanians.
What you all must remember.. is WW2 was a WAR! people often forget that.. a modern example of this in the Balkans is the Yugoslavian Civil war which was a war caused by ALL the Balkan states (not Serbia alone) wanting more power. Serbia, being the bigger and most successful and well equipped army, naturally killed more Muslims than the Bosnians did them. But is was a WAR! That is what happens in war… killing… and so you can't say the Bosnian genocide was ethnic cleansing when the exact same thing happened to Serbs! Their women were raped and their men were killed! The Chetniks were certainly not Nazi supporters as they were Serbian nationalists wanting freedom who were against the Communist take over of Yugoslavia by Tito. There may have been a minority that were Nazi followers, but you cannot label Serbs as Nazis as the percentage of Chetniks as Nazis is less than 4%. The Serbs were ethnically cleansed and bombed by Hitler as they REFUSED to become Nazis. Any pacts that happened with Mahajlovic were certainly not because of any hatred towards Jews but because they didn't want to lose the war. The Western Propoganda on Sebs is shameful. Remember that this war a war – the Serbs were raped and slaughtered as well! This was due to the government.. not the innocent people living in it! The Chetniks wanted to help their country.
And i will just leave you with this.. the Serbs were bombed by NATO in the Serbian civil war killing thousands of innocent survilians. What right did America have to interfere? The Balkans ALL wanted power and it is because of the success of their independence struggle that they had the better army and the more soldiers. If Bosnian Muslims or Croats has this number of men.. they would have done exactly trhe same.. it was a WAR! the serbs wanted to win naturally as did the Bosnians and Croats and other Balkan countries. The NATO bombings were dispicable and unecessary and it is because of the Western propoganda these people have been portrayed as brutal killers.. when in fact the were slaughtered in their homes by America during a Civil war which was caused by ALL the Balkan states.

Very true Nicholas. Although all groups in the region have engaged in violent campaigns, the Serbs historically have been the worst. It's very understandable why Serbs feel such a kinship with the Russians. Besides the linguistic similarities both nations have a long history of oppressing minorities and neighboring countries. Croatia and Bosnia is to Serbia (Yugoslavia) what Poland and the Baltic States are to Russia (Soviet Union); nations/people to be brutalized and to be oppressed. Serbia was and is a failed state. Very sad.

Serbia is such a "failed" state that they won the Davis Cup of tennis last week. You don't get that trophy in the bottom of a cracker box if you have a "failed" state! Failed states are more like Somalia because of the lawlessness or Bosnia because of the dysfunctional political system that requires every ethnicity to agree to everything, way too many politicians for such a population size, and an outsider colonial overseer to undemocratically fire politicians and interfere in party political matters. Don't pretend that communism was bad in serbia and yugoslavia because it wasn't. Every documentry i watched about the 2nd yugoslavia always stated positive things about the country. and everyone i know who lived in the second yugoslavia say that they had a better life then then now.

You are clearly brainwashed and unaware of history. I am a Serb myself and I know that not all Serbs are nazi supporters. But the chetniks were. There is not a single battle were the chetniks fought against the germans or axis.

My mother is Jewish, father Bosnian Muslim. Her father (my late grandfather) was tortured and killed by Draza Mihajlovic’s troops in the Holocaust. Thank you for your article. I think people of Israel should learn more about Serbian collaboration in the Holocaust.
I am sorry for your loss. Being squeezed between Croatian Ustashas and Serbian nazis, Bosnian Muslims suffered the most in WW2, although some of them on a very small scale did join Ustashas. They did it so they could defend themselves from nazi Serb Chetnik collaborators. It is up to us to carry the torch of HaShoah victims, the torch of truth, the torch of remembrance, the torch of innocence. By coming here and sharing your pain with the rest of us, you have already done a lot. I suggest you get involved in the Holocaust remembrance projects in your area. We must not forget. We must speak up.

Did you ever hear of Jasenovac? If so, how many Bosnian Muslims "suffered" there?
About 2,000 Muslims (Bosniaks) died in Jasenovac, and some 5,000 Croats, but the number of Serbs killed there was considerably higher.
According to the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington:
"The most reliable figures place the number of Serbs killed by the Ustasha between… 45,000 to 52,000 Serbs murdered in Jasenovac." [not 700,000 as endlessly lied by Serbs]
The Ustasha Mile Friganovic had a contest with several of the other killers in Jasenovac to see who could kill the most. He slaughtered 1100 Serbs in a few hours and the other two Ustashe (Pero Brzica, Ante Zrinusic and Sipka) managed only 300 to 400 each in the same time. In a few hours they had killed over 2000 Serbs. Do you suppose that they paced themselves so that only the genocide revisionist figure quoted by you of around the 50000 mark was reached in the four years that Jasenovac existed? They kill 2000 at Jasenovac over several hours in one night and the other approximately 48000 (it might be claimed, if you want to support the revised figure supported by the Croatian government to try and reduce their embarrasment) took three years to be slaughtered? 2000 killed in several hours means that the other approximate 48000 people would have died at a rate of 45 or so people per day. Can such a drop in the Ustasha 'workrate' be credible? The brick ovens at the camp worked overtime in burning the dead and alive into ashes and smoke and the poion gas filled the lungs of other victims.

The 13th Waffen Mountain Division of the SS Handschar [Handzar] (1st Croatian) was one of the thirty-eight divisions fielded as part of the Waffen-SS during World War II. This Nazi unit did not target Jewish people in the World War II. The Handschar division was a mountain infantry formation, the equivalent of the German “Gebirgsjäger” (Mountain troops) units. It was used to conduct operations against Yugoslav Partisans in the Independent State of Croatia. Its recruits were composed of Bosniaks (Bosnian Muslims) and Croats (Bosnian Catholics), because both ethnic groups were persecuted and killed by Serbian Nazi collaborators (Chetniks).
In World War II, Serb Chetniks (nazi collaborators) committed a genocide over the Bosnian Muslim population. By the New Year of 1943 over 100,000 Bosnian Muslims had been killed (9% of all Bosniaks at the time) and 250,000 had been expelled from their homes. An overhelming majority of Bosnian Muslims (98%) joined Partisans in the Second World War and fought against the Germans and Serbian nazi collaborators, Chetniks. Handzar Division was relatively short lived. It was created in 1943 and it disintegrated mid-field in late 1944.

Remember heavily armed Serbs stopping every international aid convoy, with food and medicine, that was meant for (by them) besieged territories? They demanded 75% of cargo for themselves. Afterward, the convoy with leftovers would be allowed to proceed, but stoned by Serbian women and children.

The Bosnian Muslims were a special project of Himmler. There are many photos of them working with the Nazis.
As for the Jews in 1992 Sarajevo – they went to Belgrade – and only after the international community had to bargain with the Bosnian Muslims WHO CONTROLLED THE ROADS AND WAY OUT.
It was the Bosnian Muslim controlled part of Sarajevo (which was a divided city actually with the frontlines running around the infamous Holiday Inn) where people were not allowed to leave by the Bosnian government forces.
Sarajevo was around 40% ethnic Serbian in 1991, but now it's down to a tiny percent. The Muslims started throwing Serbs out of their apartments at the very beginning of the war.
Recently a Serb was awarded the money for his apartment in Sarajevo that the Muslims stole and kept in a European court. But this made some worry that Bosnia could go bankrupt as there were some 20,000 Sarajevo Serb families who had their apartments taken by the Bosnian Muslims.
As for the 700,000 figure of Serbs killed by Ustasha – well it wasn't ALL at Jasenovac of course.
Many Serbs were killed in their homes or elsewhere and never even taken to Jasenovac or other camps the Croats had. Serbs were thrown into ravines and off mountains. The Serbs were also mass hung on trees and there are photos of this on the web.
In the last war the Muslims were big at cutting off the heads of Serbs and even showing videos. For instance, Naser Oric, the commander of Srebrenica which was a huge Bosnian Muslim army base.
Naser Oric was bragging to John Pomfret of the Washington Post and Bill Schiller of the Toronto Star and showing him the homemade movies he and his men made.
They displayed piles of headless Serbian men and burned out Serb villages and all the while Naser Oric was talking about how they killed Serbs at one place or another (with explosives, with "cold weapons" – knives, for example, and so on).

I have studied the Holocaust that took place in Yugoslavia during WW2 and I know full well that what he wrote about the Serbian Royalist Chetniks is Communist propaganda. The Serbian Chetniks did NOT participate in any way whatsoever in the Shoah.
The Serbian Chetnik WW2 war veterans march every year alongside US, Australian, British and other Allied WW2 veterans during ANZAC day in Australia. I should know because I was right there in Sydney during the most recent ANZAC day parade on April 25, 2010 since I was in Australia on a business trip.
Croats, Bosnian moslems and Albanians are NOT allowed to participate during the memorial parade by order of the Australian Returned Services League organization which is the official body representing the war veterans. Funny about that.

Yes Tito was a croatian. He didn't join the Austrian army he was conscripted into it and was not allowed to leave other wise he would of been killed. And he did not fight against Serbs in WW1 he was on the eastern front and fought against the Russians. of course serbia had the right to vojvodina and kosovo, vojvodina was part of the serba nation starting in the 14th century and still is. kosovo was liberated from the turks after they left the balkans and it went back to its rightful owners. according to the vast majority of the worlds countries and the UN Kosovo and Vojvodina are STILL part of serbia last time i checked you nazi. The serbs who fought for the Austrians were forced to do so as they were given the Krajina by the Austrian royal house in return for military service (these were serbs who fled the turks that setteled there). Read the history of these people (who stopped the spread of the ottomans in Europe in the book that the Canadian ambassador reviewed above). this was the root of croat hatred for serbs as they had special status in Austro-hungary. Three of my grandparents died in WW2 fighting as partisans, one was in concentration camp in Austria; other relatives were killed too in eastern Croatia from my mum's side who is Serbian and dad's side who is Greek-Catholic, not that religions is relevant to our family, but to point out huge sacrifice they gave to resist fascist and Nazi occupation. A woman wanted in Bosnia on torture charges stemming from the war following the breakup of the former Yugoslavia faces extradition after being arrested in Kentucky.
U.S. Marshals arrested 52-year-old Azra Basic earlier this week.
The Croatian-born Basic is wanted in Bosnia on charges of committing war crimes against ethnic Serb civilians in 1992. Assistant U.S. Attorney James Arehart wrote in a complaint requesting extradition that Basic is wanted in Europe on charges of murder and torture.
Arehart says Basic is accused of killing at least one person and torturing others at three camps from April to June 1992.
Basic's attorney was not immediately available for comment Thursday.

Your point about Ustaše merely proves that the Partizans were the traitors. The Partizans accepted entire Ustaše units to come over into their ranks where those Croat units, seeing how the war was turning, accepted incorporation, and rather than face war crimes courts, the Ustaši officers retained their ranks within their new (Partizan) units. So, the Partizans further took the criminal Ustaši into their ranks en masse in many areas. In so many cases a murderer who used to have a fascist Ustaša 'U' emblem on their had merely exchanged it for a red fascist communist Partizan petokraka red star and they could continue to slaughter Serbs. The Partizans had over 40 collaborative meetings with the Nazis throughout the war [source: 'Hoodwinking Churchill: Tito's Great Confidence Trick', by author Peter Batty, published September 2011] – read it and weep you commie! The Red Bandit Tito was a first class war criminal and the Germans were afraid of the non-legitimized "Chetniks" and any boasting of communist prowess is a fantasy! I always find it amusing that the fascist losers of WW2 (Albanians,Bosnian Muslims and Croats) accuse the Serbs of being Nazis.Even to this day you wil find Muslims in the Balkans and Croats wearing Nazi regalia and being proud of their fascist past.
