John Pilger on Timothy Garton Ash on Obama
John Pilger tackles Timothy Garton Ash and other courtiers of great power.
By John Pilger on Saturday, January 24th, 2009 - 178 words.
What He Said:
“We have entered a period of historical transition in which the United States will become first among equals, rather than simply top dog, hyperpower and unquestioned hegemon. But for Europeans, it may be a case of being careful what you wish for, because the Obama administration is likely to say, ‘Good, then put your money where your mouth is, and in the first place, put more troops in Afghanistan.’ ”
Timothy Garton Ash, on Obama’s victory in the New York Times.
What He Meant:
“We have entered a period of historical transition in which pompous columnists and other courtiers of great power are relieved at the prospect of a return to the delusion of a ‘unilateral’ US democracy. The last eight years have been hell for us because George W. Bush stripped away the facade and gave the world a glimpse of what American power really is, not what its liberal supporters pretend it is. Now, thank the Lord Obama, humanity will be once against distracted from the truth and be content with hoping — I hope.”

Wikileaks are the most important truthsayers of our time

I like Julian Assange's dust-dry wit. When I asked him if it was more difficult to publish information in Britain, with its draconian secrecy laws, he replied: "We haven't found a problem. When we look at Official Secrets Act labelled documents, we see that they state it is an offence to retain the information and an offence to destroy the information. So the only possible outcome is to publish the information."

This is great stuff. Garton Ash, with his smug little eyes and his double-barreled surname, is a pompous, foie-gras munching pseudo-intellectual hot-air bag, with an incredibly punchable face to boot. Look at his face in the picture, don't you just want to grab it and put it in the microwave? I've had a chronic a dislike of the man for years, so it's nice to see Pilge knock him for six.
Yeah I'm with you Tom… Dimony Farton Trash is a pseudo-intellectual idiot. All about the Pilger!
John: I really don’t know what you mean by “pompous columnists and other courtiers of great power” being relieved at the return of “the delusion of a ‘unilateral’ US democracy.” Are you saying columnists/journalists like Timothy Ash can now relax and get back to the business of running journalistic interference for the Masters of War, just as soon as Obama has ushered them back to their hiding places? Separately, even the “Hegemony or Survival” toting Chavez said recently: “We salute the people of the United States,” said Venezuela’s president, emphasizing that he hoped that Mr. Obama’s presidency would “mark a change in the relations of the United States with the countries of the third world.” Undoubtedly with the recent drop in the price of crude oil Hugo needs the cooperation of US oil companies and their cost-sharing revenue programs, but still, perhaps there is a little “hope” in the bottom of the box for change.
