“Don’t call me a traitor”: An Israeli dissident speaks

I’ve been verbally and physically abused in Israel for defending the Palestinian people, but if that’s the price for standing up for the helpless and powerless then so be it.

jao1Do you believe that you should go after your heart no matter what? Do you think you should stay loyal to your beliefs regardless? Well, I do. And I want the whole world to know that. If in my journey after justice I persuade only one person, my work is done and I will be happy.

It’s no news that my opinions and thoughts are very different to most (if not all) of those around me. Almost every Israeli I speak to about politics calls me a traitor and says I should leave the country. It is always hard and I’ve always been attacked – verbally and sometimes even physically.

As an Israeli teenager you are obligated to recruit to the army when you are 18, with very few exceptions (like a medical condition or if you have children etc.), so I, like everyone, went to serve my country. This is the first and probably the only time I really did feel like a traitor.

I had betrayed my heart, I shouldn’t been a part of this army; in fact I shouldn’t have been part of any army! In boot camp I refused under any circumstance to hold a gun, even not in the firing range on cardboard figures.

The first sentence most Israelis know in Arabic is the same. You will learn it in the first week of boot camp: WAKAF U AL ANA BATUCHA (in feminine gender) which means, “Stop or I’ll shot!” After only a few months and a lot of sights that an 18 year old should never see, I asked to be released for the simple fact that I did not want to take any part in it.

With all due respect, I want to live my life without emotional scars and traumas and it is impossible to do that when you are taking part in occupation of another nation. After a few weeks of deliberations and investigations — in all of them I declared myself a pacifist — the nightmare was finally over. I was once again a civilian, no longer a soldier.

Then I had another encounter with the IDF, this time from the other side. I stood face to face with soldiers, defending Palestinians with my body from being shot at (they don’t have the courage to shoot an Israeli — it will be all over the news). And I’ve been arrested for defending their village in a non-violent demonstration.

But never in my life had I thought the following would happen…

In the last 13 days, since the Israeli offensive on Gaza, my position has been getting harder and harder. I’ve been taking an active part in political debates and arguments on the Internet. On one hand I get e-mails and comments from Arabs all over the world calling me a hero (which I don’t believe that I am). On the other hand I get threatening and offensive e-mails and comments from Israelis and Jews calling me, among other things, a “traitor”.

Well, first of all, don’t I live in a democratic country? Where is the freedom of speech? Secondly, why should I be quiet after all I have seen? In the last few days I revealed some hypocritical non-democratic actions perpetrated by Israelis.

One of them got me thinking seriously about leaving this country-for good:

Our group on Facebook, “PREVENT A NEW GENOCIDE; SAVE GAZA”, got hacked by a group called the Jewish Internet Defense Force (JIDF). They changed the picture in the group to a picture of the Israeli flag and wrote, “This group is closed due to the fact that there is no such thing as Palestine”. In the info section of the forum they wrote, “game over”. I really believe this is a shameful act. No one has the right to do that. We all have every right to speak out about whatever we want as long as we are telling the truth and have facts on our side.

Am I a traitor just for telling the world what is really going on here? Is it wrong to uncover the ugly truth about war crimes? I’m sorry but I don’t think so.

If Israel is really the best democracy in the world like they claim, then why have I had a gun pointed at me by Israelis soldiers at demonstrations, why have I been shot at with tear gas grenades, why have I been yelled and sworn at?

If I’m a traitor because I can see the truth and stand up for the weak and helpless – so be it. I’m willing to be called a traitor for caring about human life and wishing for innocent lives to be saved. If traitor means wanting peace, freedom and justice, I am guilty as charged. Just tell me what the penalty is… but in the meantime think about children that have died in Gaza (almost 250 in 13 days), think about the four little children that have been found alive holding their mother’s dead body for days. Think about all the new orphans in Gaza, about the women and elderly, what are they on trial for and why were they sentenced to death?

Dear Embal, your story inspires me. You have woken up, now the rest of the world should. We will keep on hoping, keep on praying and keep on telling the truth. We are now not only struggling against injustice, but also for our freedom of speech on the internet, and everywhere else.
    Justice will prevail.. indeed..

  2. Fatema says:

Amazing, Thank you for your bravery.
I truly admire your strength, and pray that more people will see the truth, and understand the basics of humanity like yourself. I think you are a hero! Inspirational

very inspiring to know that there are people like you as well! keep it up!.

  4. SofiaHarris says:

You are, indeed, an inspiration. I love people who break stereotypes, and you certaintly do ;) What an awfull situation we are all facing, and this should also tell the Israeli government something; even their own people are suffering, not from the rockets of Hamas, but of their own unjust warfare.

I commend your bravery and strong character. Please, never stop speaking up; your words are important.

  5. Che says:

Thank you. You've just proven what I always believe; that people shouldn't be judged by their religion or where they come from; that they should be judged by how they see things and what they thoughts. Thank you for proving me right.

Thank you for speaking what you think is right and speak your words, regardless of what you're facing.

  6. Mohamed Ali says:

I am an Arab and I want to thank you for giving me hope tonight that there are people out there who are true to themselves and true to humanity. You are a Jew not a Zionist and that is why you see right from wrong. Keep the faith, justice will prevail….

  7. Ben Hertzelman says:

I am a Jew. I am not a zionist. I couldn't agree with you more. The injustices by the state of Israel are incredulous. Palestinians should be our brothers, not our enemies. Unfortunately, there needs to be a lot of work by both sides to ensure this. So far however, Israel has done nothing but ensure that this will be an extremely hard task.

Keep speaking out Enbal. You are an inspiration. Israel is wrong in this, and it is not a shame to admit it.

After long days of writing comments and defence palestine on facebook , youtube , rolling updates…
After long days of watching the news getting disappointments and some times nusia from politics
i consider your article an oasis to relax..
yes enbal with people like you we can live together in peace we have always do…
my step father still telling us the stories about his jewish neighbours in egypt and how he was the one reponsible for openning and closing lights for them on saturdays and how they spent fridays always together preparing food for the next day…
he keep saying these people calling themselves zionst are not jews ..they are not even humans.
iknow it is hard to stand alone against the blowing wind , but at least when you go to sleep you know that you have done your best to keep your hands and your soul clean from the blood of those children and all people that the IDF and hagana have killed since this rasistic idea of zionist came up.

  9. Mary says:

Thank you for your beautiful insights and courage to speak out against the injustices that are happening in Palestine. You may feel alone in your struggle to speak out as a Jew against the murderous acts of your government, but you are not. Most are afraid to speak out in fear that they or their famlies will be attacked by Zionists in your midst. You will find that the vast majority of Israeli activists in the US and abroad are in fact paid activists and are simply doing their jobs. I spoke to a woman today at a Pro-Palestinian rally that was recently released from her position at Stand With US. Once she was no longer obligated or being paid to speak for Israel, she bravely crossed the line and was finally able to speak with her heart and told me how sorry she was for what she stood for just last week. She voiced her opinion to her peers at Stand WIth US and was released immediately. I guess in order to be a part of their organization, you cannot believe or strive for peace, nor have an objective position or heart. Stand tall Enbal. Truth, justice and history are on your side.

  10. Enbal Gross says:

thank you so much for your words- all of you.
people like you are my strength. you remind me over and over that I am right and that I should go on.
and to you- my Palestinian brothers and sisters- I will always be your voice for justice-for as long as I live.
    peace

  11. Bashir says:

Great essay. Good to see people with senses, compassion and logic still roam this planet. I want to point out the real cause of all this frustration and injustice is the pro-Israel lobby in the US. Have you noticed that US takes Israel's side unconditionally every time even if it is to the detriment of US interests, let alone palestinians? Have you noticed US blocking every UN resolution or UN Security Council plan to broker a cease-fire, send mediation troops or even criticize Israel? Have you noticed that every Senator and politician repeats the same line "Israel has the right to defend itself against terrorists", and "Israel is our ally". Wonder why none of the efforts for a two-state solution bare any fruit? The reason is pro-Israel lobby in us such as AIPAC, ADL, AJC, Conference of Presidents, etc have so much influence and due to lack of any organized opposition, politicians always support Israel's position dictated by these lobbies. If a politician makes the mistake of speaking or worst voting against any measures favorable to Israel, the lobby goes to work through their vast control of media networks (TV, Newspaper) and array of think tanks and on-air analysts to discredit the politician through irrelevant accusations or for anti-semitic stance. They will also spend and work hard to ensure the politician never gets into office again. There are also some ideological supporters in the conservative evangelical groups that interpret Israel's complete control of the region as a preamble to the Armageddon and return of Christ, thus aligning themselves with the pro-Israel lobby and helping their cause in hope of speedy fulfillment of their prophecy (yes, this is happening in the 21st century). Right now the only opposition to the pro-Israel lobby are some scattered muslim and arab lobbying groups that lack the money, vote or any clout to influence politicians and the US foreign policy. I have put up a site to garner support for a grass-roots movement to counter the pro-Israel lobby (http://www.alternativeviewcoalition.com).For it to work, we need high number of supporters to provide financial and intellectual support. Right now there is no handicap for a politician who votes pro-Israel as the scattered opposition has no power or influence to make a dent in the politician's career. Just like other issues, environment, gay-rights, abortion that there are lobbies for both sides, we need a lobby to counter the pro-Israel position and that has been missing until now. It is important to note that the position of this lobby is not anti-israel or anti-jewish, it works to promote a balanced and fair foreign policy position. Come join and spread the word:

Just one note, the Israel government is giving money, fuel, food and Egyptians don't do anything for lovely Palestinian people, for last 60 years.

    • Andrea says:

According to the Geneva Conventions, the occupier has to provide for the occupied.
Since Egypt didn't occupy anybody's land, it's not their business.

  13. Ilia says:

I invite everybody to sleep in my House in Ashkelon,to feel the Hamas aggression, what do you think about to visit us,the cofe and tea on me

    • Monstris says:

and a friend of mine invites you to her house in jabaliya to feel the Israeli aggression. what say you? middle east house swap?

she'd throw in some coffee and tea as well but she ran out of both a couple of days ago – she might be able to manage a rancid tomato and some stale crackers. and the running water stopped working ages ago so it's bring your own.

gets pretty cold at night so i suppose staying awake and shivering with fear as the idf schlep through your roads is doing some good.

    • ola says:

i invite u llia to have a cup of tea or coffee in my house in Gaza
and feel the israeli bombs and rockets all over Gaza
it is just i can`t guarantee u`ll go back safe cause i don`t know when a bomb will fall over my house as all houses in the area were destroyed
ah i remember i don`t have electricity at my home, nor gas, nor water, nor tea nor coffee so bring ur stuff with u

  14. Enbal says:

    dear llia
what do you think about living under occupation for 60 years?
in the last 2 weaks – there are 10 dead ppl in the israeli side and 821 on the Palestinian side.
so with all the sadness i feel for the ppl in the south that have been suffering from Kasams – allow me to say that you are making it much worse then it is.
in 8 years maybe 5 israelis were killed by kasams.
in 14 days, almost 1000 ppl were killed by IDF

  15. Ilia says:

So from your words if 1000 ppl were killed by Hamas,it's ok,but the main problem Israel is a state and state must protect there citizens, and right now it doesn't metter how many people is going to be killed,in Africa each day die 50000 children don't you know? The Palestinian people should take the responsibility about what is happening in GAZA,no one except them can stop it,now it's Ashkelon, tomorrow TA,then next step leave the Israel back to where you come from,I believe you have no place to go to,or you have English or American citizenship?

  16. Enbal says:

i was born in israel….and i will not leave.
and it doen't matter how killed the 1000 ppl. what matters is the numbers: 10 to 821….

  17. Rico Fikri says:

My heart goes with you Enbal, and I hope that we will ALL see the light of day together, when we make World Peace together under God. Salaam.

  18. ilia says:

So what? 1 to 1 is ok 1 to 100,not so good?but what do you expect for?the Hamas is using the Palestinian people for his own interests and naive Palestinian people are trusting to Hamas,so the Hamas regime must die like any other totalitarian regime,we must free the Palestinian people.

  19. Hope says:

So Ilia Israel, and only Israel, has the right to protect its citizens? Hamas may have hit the first rocket (THAT DID NOT KILL ANYONE) but to tell you for the millionth time that the people of Gaza didn't have the basic necessary needs of human life: like bread, clean water, fuel, and medicine. Or from what I understand from you Hamas, a democratically elected government has no right to protect its citizens? As a fellow human being, I ask you to look for the truth in your heart and around you as Enbal has done and don't let anyone insult your intelligence. I will not go into numbers of the dead because they are all human beings but I do ask you to start at the definition of Genocide.
    Hope

  20. ilia says:

So who is responsible for poor Palestinian people, again Israel?there are 1.2 billion Arab people who can be responsible for Palestinian people, but the Israel government held the main responsibility and what we have for it,rockets? If you want the truth you have to face it,there is no perfect world, people are die and I don't wanna see my child is crying because he is afraid of rockets in the age of 3,we are peaceful country and peaceful people are leaving here, but I don't where you from but I'm sure if rocket will fell near your house ,your government will do the same,so you'll be happy and you'll shut your mouth and go work.

  21. Enbal says:

    ilia….
if you after 8 years (or as many as you lived here from this 8 years) you have the right (so you say) to kill in the name of defense and protection ….so what will the Palestinians have to do after 60 years?!
it is NOT right to kill, and it is even more wrong to say you have a justified reason for doing so!
human lives are sacred, and once you srop drom understanding it- you are no longer human .
i lived here for all my life, through every war or attack . why is that , that i can see the truth and you can't? because i have the courage to shake off every myth and lie that the government keep on telling me.
because i can see that israel is breaching EVERY international low! by occupying a land and a nation and treated them with nothing but belligerence and it is impossible to live like that for 60 damn years!!!

  22. Enbal says:

"and once you srop drom understanding it"
and once you stop from understanding it ******

  23. Neus says:

I'm unconditionally for peace, and most of the spanish people are for Palestinian people!! Someone must stop this massacre, perhaps Obama will be able to do something for the palestinians. The world is waiting for a change, for hope, for a better understanding between nations… and he can be the answer. I hope he will!!!
Courage, palestinian citizens!!!! We'll keep doing demonstrations to show our strength refuse to the israely acts!
    Peace and Justice!!!!!!

  24. Ilia says:

unfortunately you can change it ,but the answer is very simple the Palestinians are not ready for there own country, because they don't want to held the responsibility for there lives,I agree with you it is impossible to live like that for 60 years, but we don't have a choice right now, when Palestinians will be ready, the Israel will be ready too,but remember 6000000 of Jews had to die to have there own Country,in modern world it much much less, but they have to be ready.

  25. ilia says:

The very funny thing that as far as you living from here you are so unconditionally for peace, you are so funny people, please come to us live with us,and then you have to right to say a word

  26. Enbal says:

    ilia
i live here and still am really and truly – unconditionally for peace.
so please come go live in Gaza and then you will have the right to say a word.

  29. Mike says:

well llia, im from quebec, and people are not blind, these things are happening… israel is not even trying to spare civilian life! if u want to know the truth, try watching a news channel, ex: http://www.euronews.net,http://www.bbc.com,http://www.aljazeera.net/english

  30. mike says:

a news channel that is not corrupt*

  31. mike says:

so israel targeting aid trucks, ambulance cars, UN schools, bombing houses during the so called humanitarian corridor, killing innocents children and women, using phosphorus weapons that can actually burn flesh and most importantly caging innocents in a war zone and not allowing them to leave is a justification for israel's right to defend its people? wake up people!

  32. Ilia says:

    Dear Stephanie,

1.you have to take history lesson first, before you are enter the discussion the Jew people always dream about there own country,2. without the Israel Palestine wouldn't survive,if you know there was a desert before 1948,and one more thing if you think the Hamas defend the Palestine you are so wrong, hamas are using the Palestine people to achieve his own targets, the all money and EU gave to Hamas is going to buy a guns and bombs, they don't build schools or roads, they don't invest into economy.

Hamas is a pure terrorist organization,I truly believe that the destiny of Palestinian people in there own hands, and Israel have to free the Palestinian from Hamas influence.

    • Khaled says:

llia , I believe you are the one who need history lesson , "without the Israel Palestine wouldn't survive,if you know there was a desert before 1948" you said , this is just one of the lies that the so called Israel trying to spread to justify it's occupation to Palestine.

For those who want to believe that Palestine did not exist or was a desert, the below link is for you! Palestine was a civilized country ; had luxury homes, luxury hotels, cinemas, and beautiful landscaping!

  33. Ilia says:

    Dear Enbal,

    Where are you from?

  34. Ilia says:

Mike where are you from? You know things even IDF don't know, please tell us,instead of to provide wrong information, and please don't tell us that hamas is not using Ambulance to move weapons or there soldiers, and there is a war and people die on war,why don't you people say a word about the Iraq, because of the BIG BROTHER?In the Iraq is the same situation,so please leave to Israel handle the situation, your make a lot of noice, but I glad nobody are listening to you.

  35. Enbal says:

ilia, are you blide? what mike said is all over the new all around the world .
the fact the israeli news are ignoring it- will not make it disappear!!! this are the facts!

  36. Enbal says:

    blind**

  37. Ella says:

    Dear all,

For better understanding of this situation you have to live in Israel or in Gaza…The both side are suffering, but Hamas is terrorist organization that uses the palestinian ppl, they (HAMAS'S soldiers) send the kasams from building like school and keep their ammunition in civilian's houses…keep the ppl in area of fighting…and fake the photos…and all of this is for ppl like you in order to feel mercies for palestinien ppl. AND they very successfully do it!
The situation is very bad and sad. But if hamas has had the ability to kill all of israel citizens, hi would already did it!!! All money that they (HAMAS) have, they use to buy guns and bombs instead to improve the basic conditions of the palestinian ppl.
Enbal, with all respect to you and your opinion, what are your suggesting? I hope that you understand, that if Israel will not continue with this operation the next kasam can be in your house or in houses of your friends!?

  38. Yoav says:

Israel is now reacting to 8 years of rockets fired daily into israely citys, and by that doing what every contry would have done 7.9 years ago. __Its true, Israel has don horrable crimes aganist the palestinians during the past 60 years, and as an israely sitizen, i (and meny more) have a great share of critisizem against some of those actions. Gaza today is not the case. The israely goverment withdrawd all settlers and arm forces in 2005. Israel today has every right to protect her citizens from all kindes of agration. Is hamas doing the same ? Is he trying to get his people out of harms way ? Just the opposite ! By using mosques, schools and hospitals they are sacrificing their people. By deliberately bringing the battles into gazas streets they are sacrificing their people, By forcing citizens to the roof tops they are sacrificing their people, By kidnapping an Israeli soldier and asking for an ridiculous compensation the are sacrificing their people. By doing everything possible to make an appearance of an humanitarian crisis (bombing Israeli workers in merchandise gateway into gaza, not accepting gasoline) they are sacrificing their people. __

  39. Yoav says:

It is hamas witch is doing everything to "win" the role of the victim. For them every innocent Palestinian killed is a victory.
As for Israel, i dont see why we are morally obliged to provide petrol, electricity and goods to an hostile government. Its true, hundreds of innocents are being killed by our bombes, but who is to blame ? There is no country in the world witch is in a day to day battle against terror, and those who do fight terror do much less and kill much more innocent citizens

  40. Stephanie says:

    IIia,
I said that getting a country wasn't the reason they died. They didn't die FOR that, (def. not the 6000000 you were talking about).

  41. Stephanie says:

    Ilia,
you said "Hamas is going to buy a guns and bombs, they don't build schools or roads, they don't invest into economy. "
That's not even an argument. In an occupied land, your first priorety HAS to be some way of defending your self (atleast in storage)…and also I dunno how hamas (or any gov't for that matter) is going to improve the conditions of its people, if the borders are blocked to begin with….
also, Israel gets a lot of support from other countries and they invest the money into weapons as well. I see that's the norm

and if you actually believe that Israel is bombing Gaza because of the rockets that were fired, then you're mistaken. They wanted a reason to firther expand their territory. I don't even think they actually know who they're targetting. They're randomly killing people and hoping to randomly destroy the hamas gov't? how can you get rid of the government? oh I know. KILL EVERYONE IN GAZA.. This birings me back to my point in that they're trying to futher occupy the land.

  42. Stephanie says:

    also,

"without the Israel Palestine wouldn't survive,if you know there was a desert before 1948"

you jjust admitted that Israel is taking the land from its people (although that was never an argument).
But yeah, without Israel bombing, Im pretty sure palestinians will survive….

  43. the jewish bible says:

the jewish bible says the israel is the jewish people land
there is no such thing as palestinians ( vagabonds)
we are more moral than any country in this world'actually if look real close
    we invented the moral/
abraham is the father of the jewish people . muhamad is fake mesaich/
europe wake up!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! the arabs are taking over the world!!!!!!!!! with terror!!!!!!!!!

    • Ala Mashal says:

Bible says It was a Jewish land in those days, they reason, Nothing could be farther from the truth. It is absurd to reach so far back into the mists of history to argue about who should have Palestine today, and I apologies for it. Yet the Jews do this, and I must reply to their "historic claim." I wonder if the world has ever seen a stranger sight than a group of people seriously pretending to claim a land because their ancestors lived there some 2,000 years ago!
Italians might claim England, which the Romans held so long. England might claim France, "homeland" of the conquering Normans. And the French Normans might claim Norway, where their ancestors originated. And incidentally, we Arabs might claim Spain, which we held for 700 years.
Many Mexicans might claim Spain, "homeland" of their forefathers. They might even claim Texas, which was Mexican until 100 years ago. And suppose the American Indians claimed the "homeland" of which they were the sole, native, and ancient occupants until only some 450 years ago!

  44. Stephanie says:

Jewish bible? If you don't know what it's called, I dunno if I want to know or even care about what you say. But honestly, there are soooo many religions in the world, so your "bible" isn't any diferent (and shouldn't be) than any fiction novel on my book-shelf. Just because you beleive in it, doesn't make it true. This applies to all religions (not really trying to attack the jews, but just saying….).

also, is moral a hebrew word that means "kill"??

    • Omri says:

Is "kill" an english word that means "woah little over the top smells of anti-sematism, but she'll say it's just about the zionists, o yeah that's ok then, but she's still spreading lies"?? that would be expanding my vocabulary. Thank you.

  45. khalid says:

in reply to "the jewish bible", it is called the Hora
islam is not a religion of terrorism as u claim! it is not what usama binladen does, and it is not what "corrupt news channels" tell u it is… it is a religion of peace, and in the quran it is clearly stated that killing innocents and suicide are strictly forbidden. and u said "muhamad is fake mesaich"
then how do u explain the miracles of the quran? how did mohammad know details of recent scientific discoveries? how did he know that this, the recreation of the state of israel was gonna happen again, twice?!
    for more info, check :
    http://www.miraclesofthequran.com/index2.html

there is only one version of the quran in the world, and u can use it to verify what is in this website

  46. Ilia says:

Dear Stephanie,as you probably know the GAZA also has a border with Egypt, but the Egyptian told very clear to all the Hamas and all world that they don't wanna see this border open,so what do you want from Israel when the all terror attacks are happen,to open all the borders,it's not gonna happen, because we have to facing with the terror activity of Hamas on daily basis.

  47. Ilia says:

Also Stephanie please note that 1.2 billion Arabs living around the Israel, and only 7 million jews,so the Palestinians also have a support from a lot of reach countries, you prefer to see only one side, and its very sad because the world don't wanna see the all Arab expansion and more important what they bring to the world and they bring nothing except violence, and why don't you care and talking about what happen in Sri Lanka also people are dieing there, please be more objective

  48. Ilia says:

The Jews are not promoting brain washing the children in military training camps, teaching them how to blow themselves up and cause maximum deaths of Jews and other non Muslims!

The Jews don't hijack planes, nor kill athletes at the Olympics or blow themselves up in German restaurants. There is not a single Jew that has destroyed a church. There is not a single Jew that protests by killing people.

The Jews don't traffic slaves, nor have leaders calling for Jihad and death to all the Infidels.

Perhaps the world's Muslims should consider investing more in standard education and less in blaming the Jews for all their problems.

Regardless of your feelings about the crisis between Israel and the Palestinians and Arab neighbors, even if you believe there is more culpability on Israel 's part, the following two sentences really say it all:

'If the Arabs put down their weapons today, there would be no more violence. If the Jews put down their weapons today, there would be no more Israel' -Benjamin Netanyahu
