Diving in Lake Malawi

Freshwater Diving … no thanks, not for me. Just the thought of it used to bring back haunting memories of freezing my toes off on an overcast morning in some dank quarry. Visibility zero, water temperature 6 degrees and air temperature not much better. If I remember correctly, the highlight of one particular dive was bumping into discarded shopping trolleys from three different supermarkets! As an unashamed ‘fair-weather diver’ I had no inclination to drop back into any type of desalinated underwater environment. That of course all changed when I stumbled upon Lake Malawi

As we landed at Tivat, we exited the plane directly on the tarmac and in the rear of the aircraft. The weather was noticeably warmer and sunnier than in Belgrade which had been enduring (along with much of the rest of Europe) record rains. We welcomed the warmth! As we entered the waiting area for uncleared passenger arrivals, I noticed the Montenegrin flag prominently displayed and which appears very similar to the Albanian flag except that the double-headed eagle is gold instead of black. The airport was clearly old – from Josip Broz Tito’s era – and too small for the throngs of visitors who appeared to be mostly European – especially Russian and Ukranian. It needed a major overhaul/renovation
